Between 2004 and 2008, there was an increase of 111 percent in the number of emergency room visits as a result of the overuse of painkiller drugs, according to Harvard Health Publications.
If you choose to administer the oxycodone through an IV, the drug is crushed and diluted with water. Injecting oxycodone or better known as “shooting up” can be done through the veins, muscles or by injecting it underneath the skin. While the effects are definitely more intense, by injecting the oxycodone you have greatly increased the likelihood that the abuser will overdose. Overdose is the number one reason injecting oxycodone has been proven to be extremely dangerous.
Another reason would be that the drug changes the pain messages that the brain receives from the body, therefore that reduces a person’s sense of pain and also affects their emotional response to it. They get the feeling of “it doesn’t hurt anymore”. That being said, a person who abuses this drug could further injure himself since he has no known response to the pain. As an example, the user breaks their leg but because they have reduced their sense of pain, they continue to walk on the leg while under the influence of the oxycodone further injuring the leg.

Injecting drugs is dangerous and can lead to infection and other issues.
Breathing irregularity or respiratory depression may happen as a result of injecting Oxycodone. Once you inject oxycodone, the effect, which now becomes immediate, enters the blood stream very quickly. Breathing can them become shallow or slowed and in extreme cases it could possibly stop completely, resulting in death.
A user should always be concerned when they are injecting any type of drug. One should be aware of any tell tale signs of infection at the injection site. Always be aware by injecting this drug in your body you have opened yourself up for any of the following scenarios:
- Abscess at the site of the injection
- Killing the tissue at the injection site
- Hepatitis
- HIV
Injecting oxycodone creates a mindset in which the only goal of the user is to constantly get more and more of the drug. Users lose any interest in their work, their family and the effect on their personal well being is just simply destroyed, they just don’t seem to care about themselves at all. They completely give up on themselves because they just want to get to the next “high”. As a result of that craving or need the user often develops a drug-seeking behavior in which absolutely nothing else matters, not their job, and certainly not their family and friends. They crave it so badly they will sacrifice it all in an effort to obtain money to buy more oxycodone.
