Strengths

Oxycodone strengths vary from one formulation to the next but are generally available in strengths that range from 5mg up to 80mg. There are various formulations of Oxycodone available from pharmacies today including Oxycontin which is available all the way up to 80mg time release tablets and Roxicodone which is widely available in a 30mg strength as well as in 15mg tablets and other variations.

On the lowest end, Oxycodone strengths can be reduced all the way down to 2.5mg but this is not a common procedure as most prescriptions have at least 5mg with 10mg tablets being the norm in the medical field. Prescription Oxycodone strengths will vary based on the type of formulation that is prescribed and the individual needs of the patient him or herself.

Percocet, a type of Oxycodone, is available in strengths that range from 2.5mg to 10mg. In this particular medication, the Oxycodone is paired with acetaminophen. The amount of acetaminophen used in each formulation ranges from 325mg to 650mg depending on the individual prescription. There are actually variations of the drug which contain high and low doses of acetaminophen such as the 10mg tablets which are available with just 325mg of acetaminophen as well as with 650mg acetaminophen.

OxyContin, a widely abused type of Oxycodone is also available in a variety of different strengths. On the low end, OxyContin comes in a 10mg tablet that also contains hydroxypropyl cellulose. One the more extreme end, Oxycontin is available in an 80mg time release tablet that contains hydroxypropyl cellulose and yellow iron oxide. Variations of this Oxycodone containing medication include tablets in 15mg, 20mg, 30mg, 40mg, and 60mg forms.

Oxycodone strengths can be very minute in some drugs but may be very prevalent and dangerous in others. Immediate release versions of Oxycodone containing drugs typically do not contain very high Oxycodone strengths because of the dangers associated with a user taking too much of the drug at once and overdosing. However, time release Oxycodone such as Oxycontin is available in very high strengths but is meant to provide 12 hours of continuous pain relief.

Extended Release tablets of Oxycodone come in 10mg, 20mg, 40mg and 80mg tablets. The manufacturer of the individual drug itself will mark the pill in a special way to differentiate between an immediate release form of the drug and an extended release form of Oxycodone. Oxycodone is also available in a liquid form that ranges from 5mg per 5ml to 20mg in 1ml.

Various Oxycodone strengths may be prescribed to a patient depending on the severity of the pain and other factors. For chronic pain that does not go away, many patients are now prescribed time release or extended release Oxycodone strengths that provide maximum pain relieve for a period of 12 hours at a time. This works to improve quality of life for these patients while taking away the need to focus on taking pain medication every four to six hours—instead, the user can take one table every twelve hours or twice a day and have continuous pain relief.
